The Story of Jawai
Where leopards and legend share the land
Between the granite kopjes of the Aravalli hills, leopards move as they have for centuries, unhurried and unafraid. The Vintage Jawai is a handful of tents pitched lightly on this ancient ground, where wilderness is not a backdrop but the whole of the experience.

The Tented Suites
Seven tented suites, and no more. Each is pitched apart from the others on the granite, canvas and stone and old teak, cooled by the desert night and opened to the hills at dawn. There is nothing between you and the wild but a thin, beautiful wall of cloth — and that is the whole point.

Experiences
Leopard safaris at dawn
Leopard safaris at dawn — the day begins in the dark, tea in hand, tracking cats across the kopjes with a naturalist who reads the rocks like a page.
Wilderness sundowners
Wilderness sundowners — a table set on a high rock as the sun goes down over the Aravalli, gin cooling, the plains turning to gold.
Bush dining
Bush dining — a long lunch under a lone tree, or dinner by lantern in a dry riverbed, cooked slowly over open flame.
Rabari village walks
Rabari village walks — an unhurried morning among the herders who have shared this land with the leopard for generations, told in their own words.
Ancient temple trails
Ancient temple trails — a walk to the old shrines set among the boulders, where pilgrims and big cats keep the same quiet company.
Birding
Birding — flamingoes on the Jawai dam, sarus cranes at the water's edge, and eagles turning slow circles over the hills.
Star-gazing
Star-gazing — far from any town, the desert sky comes down to the horizon, and the camp falls silent to watch it.

At the table
The Dining Deck
An open-air deck raised above the plains, where breakfast arrives with the first drive back and dinner is served under the whole of the sky. The kitchen cooks close to the land — millet from the fields, vegetables from the village, spice ground each morning.

By firelight
Dinner in the rocks
When the night turns cool the camp gathers in a hollow of the rocks, lanterns strung between the boulders and a fire at the centre. It is the oldest kind of dining room — stone underfoot, flame in the middle, the desert dark all around, and a long table of slow Rajasthani cooking.

In their words
From our guests
“We came for the leopards and left changed by the silence. Three mornings in, our tracker found a mother and cub on the rocks at first light, and no one in the vehicle spoke for an hour.”
“The most beautiful tent I have ever slept in, and the kindest people I have ever been looked after by. This is luxury that never once raises its voice.”
“What stays with me is not the thread count but the herders, the temples, the way the whole camp went quiet for the stars. A rare, rooted sort of place.”
“Dinner in the riverbed by firelight was the finest meal of our year. The leopards were the reason we booked; the land is the reason we will return.”

Questions, answered
When is the best time to see leopards?
Leopards are seen year-round at Jawai — this is one of the highest densities of wild leopard anywhere outside a national park. October to March brings cool, clear mornings and the most comfortable conditions, and sightings are often strongest when the cats move on the rocks by day. We keep our vehicles to a strict, respectful distance, so every drive is a genuine encounter, never a guaranteed one.
How do we reach the camp?
The camp lies near Bera, in the Pali district of Rajasthan. Udaipur airport is roughly a three-hour drive and Jodhpur about two and a half; both connect daily to Delhi and Mumbai. The nearest railhead is Falna, around forty minutes away. We are glad to arrange a private car and driver for any leg of the journey.
What is included in a stay?
A stay is fully inclusive: your tented suite, all meals and the camp bar, and two shared safaris each day with a resident naturalist. Village walks, temple trails, sundowners and star-gazing are woven through your days with us. Private vehicles, spa treatments and bespoke journeys can be added with pleasure.
Is the camp suitable for children?
Families are warmly welcome. Children of all ages may stay; for shared game drives we suggest eight years and above, and we are happy to arrange a private vehicle for younger families so the whole party can travel at its own pace.
What should we pack?
Soft, earth-toned layers for cool mornings and warm days, a light jacket for dawn drives, a hat, sunscreen and good walking shoes. Binoculars and a camera reward every drive. Desert nights turn genuinely cold from November to February, so bring something warm for the fireside.
How large is the camp?
Deliberately small. A handful of tented suites means the land is never crowded and the service never hurried — most evenings the whole camp gathers around one fire.
